The title of this series is a play on the concept of nobility— a title granting an individual or family with special privilege or commendation. To garner this recognition, some individuals earned it through their noteworthy accomplishments, whereas others were granted the title as birthright, before accomplishing anything as an individual. This same inequality parallel exists in the subjects of these drawings. In some cases, the uniqueness of these individuals is due to the result of their genes more than their accomplishments, while in others it has been achieved through great effort. Still others fit neatly into neither category, or have a distinction of questionable merit. The subjects of these drawings are men who have achieved singular distinctions, specifically for the shapes and abilities of their bodies. Each of the men have at some point held the unique distinction of being the tallest, shortest, heaviest, fastest, oldest or strongest man on earth. I’m really interested in what it is that makes someone famous or notable, and whether merit or acknowledgement is warranted. | ![]() 2010 |
